Hope this helps someone else - thanks for listening!ītw, the drive I'm using is a 10TB Seagate external backup drive. Even though it is slow, it is consistent and it is not bringing the NAS to its knees like it was before. Now in just about 14 hours into its backup process and has completed 2TB of data and is still chunking along at a consistent speed. Before it took 2-3 days to back up 2TB of data and then just stopped at one point and hung. So if you have an external USB drive on your Synology, make sure the USB cable is of sufficient quality. The overall performance of the NAS went back to normal as well which is great. I also enabled write caching on the drive as well and formatted the drive with the Synology NAS to EXT4 but the problem persisted until I changed that cable out. I was lucky enough to also have a spare cable from another drive so I tried it - and wow, it fixed it for me too. I did some more searching and came across a post where someone looked at the cable that came with their external drive - they thought it looked a bit on the thin side so they replaced it and boom - much faster and consistent USB transfer speeds. But the UI got super sluggish and any network activity was ultra slow. There was not much data being transferred, no CPU usage, nothing. I also noticed that when I was backing up the drive the overall performance of the NAS would drop to its knees. Mine was very slow - so slow that it would not look like it would make any progress at all after terabytes of data being backed up. I've searched and found plenty of people saying how slow HyperBackup is. I wanted to share this for anyone that may be using an external USB drive on their Synology NAS. ![]()
